The Campus Ministry Department at Bishop Kelly High School provides an integrated ministry through the celebration of Word and Sacrament, the building of community and the witnessing to Catholic Social Teaching through the promotion of service and advocacy for justice in the world in which we live. It is very active in the spiritual life and faith development of the students and staff of Bishop Kelly High School. Campus Ministry offers unique and challenging opportunities through which students and staff can deepen their understanding and experience of themselves as human persons and their faith as Christians. It is sensitive to the religious and moral growth of all students of all faiths. We try to meet each student where they are his/her personal faith journey and we hope to enable each student to develop a deep and lasting relationship with God.
Our philosophy is that students need to minister to each other. Peer ministry is offered through liturgical roles, retreat leaders, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and in conjunction with the Challenger Program. Campus ministry should be seen as a "safe haven," where students can feel free to bring their problems and concerns to the Campus Ministry Coordinator and to each other in a relaxed environment. Students are welcome to make an appointment or walk in and spend time.
What is the Campus Ministry Class?
There are many ways to live your faith each day. By taking Bishop Kelly’s Campus Ministry class, you can enhance your own spirituality by spreading the love of Christ to others, and taking an active part in the Christian community at BK so that you can not only live, but also share your faith.
Campus Ministry is a semester-long senior elective that is designed to help students gain a greater appreciation for their faith, as well as to help the entire student body to have meaningful worship, community and service experiences. Class participants are responsible for planning and implementing school liturgies and prayer services, morning prayer and other faith-based experiences, such as reconciliation services. Students are trained in lectoring and proclaiming Scripture through words and action. Students who have already been confirmed may be trained as Eucharistic ministers.
Spreading The "Good News"- Student Campus Ministers put their faith into action by giving talks on retreats and inviting fellow students to share their faith in small groups. They challenge other students to become more aware of God in their lives. It is an opportunity to be authentic and real and talk about issues relevant to students.
To continue to reach out and serve the community around us locally and globally, student campus ministers conduct schoolwide service projects (link to service page) each semester. Every fall, student campus ministers coordinate a schoolwide Food Drive; and in the spring during Lent, they facilitate our participation in "Pennies from Heaven". As needs arise we also offer “jean days” to raise funds for special causes.
Who Are Student Campus Ministers?
Student Campus Ministers are seniors who share in the Campus Ministry Coordinator’s role of ministering to the student body and staff as well as to the surrounding community. Campus Ministry is open to all students in the 12th grade. Students selected as Campus Ministers will be called upon to share their faith in a variety of ways, and must be comfortable doing so. You do not have to be Catholic to participate in the class; members of all faith denominations are welcome.
How Do I Become a Student Campus Minister?
At the end of spring semester juniors apply to become a student Campus Minister. There is a formal application process conducted by the Campus Ministry Coordinator, which includes a written application and an interview in May. Applicants must have at least a 2.0 GPA and must not have been subjected to any prior major disciplinary actions.
