 | Mrs. Marta Watson Economics and Social Studies mwatson@bk.org Marta Watson worked many years as a senior financial
management analyst for the State of Idaho prior to joining
the faculty at Bishop Kelly High School. This rich work
experience has proven valuable in teaching economics.
In 1980, Mrs. Watson earned her bachelor’s degree in
Economics and History as well as a minor in Spanish.
She spent one year in an economics doctoral program at the University of Notre Dame and
later completed a Masters of Business Administration with an Economics emphasis from Boise
State University. For the next several years she worked for the state of Idaho analyzing and
forecasting budgets. Mrs.Watson had always known that she wanted to teach economics and
in 2000 received a Masters in Education, Curriculum and Instruction with Secondary Certification.
After earning this degree Mrs.Watson taught macroeconomics at the university and
recognized that there was a critical need for better economic education at the high school level.
In 2001, Marta began teaching a dynamic and comprehensive economics course at Bishop
Kelly where both she and her students have been nationally recognized. She also teaches History
and American Government. Mrs.Watson says that she really loves history and economics
and has found that both subjects are often hard for students to appreciate. Her goal is to
provide a safe environment where students can explore ideas and learn not only the specifics,
but also come to love these subjects. Her hope is that students will understand the story of how
the world has come to be what it is, and also enable them to be successful in college and beyond
with a good understanding of economics and decision-making.
In addition to teaching Mrs. Watson is the coach of the Academic Decathlon team, Ski Team
advisor, the Dead Economists Society advisor and the Book Club moderator. Marta also serves
on both the BK finance and technology committees. While away from school, Marta loves to
ski, fish, backpack, camp, travel, garden, cook, remodel, read and anything that involves family. |
