Teaching is an opportunity to provide leadership, communicate with and inspire students according to Tom Shanahan. He loves that Physical Education allows him to energize and educate students for healthy lifestyle and that it incorporates energy through the physical, mental and social domains.
Tom came from Moyvane, County Kerry, Ireland in 1992 to run track and cross-country at Central Oregon Community College. In 1994 he moved to Boise to continue his running career and education at Boise State University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He will obtain his Masters in Athletic Administration from Idaho State University in May of 2009.
As a coach for cross-country and track, Mr. Shanahan has experienced much success. He has been named “Cross-Country State Coach of the Year” eight times, “Cross-Country District Coach of the Year” eleven times and his teams have won eight state championships!
Tom enjoys many outdoor activities including running, golfing, fishing, and skiing, as well as camping and hiking in Idaho’s Sawtooth mountains. One might be surprised to learn that Coach Shanahan will teach the Gaelic language to any interested student and that he turns “Bog” in Ireland every summer.
