Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Bishop Kelly High School. One of the best things about our school is the feeling of community, and there are many ways to be a part of that community.
Volunteers are a vital part of the Bishop Kelly family, and you can choose to help in your area of interest. Here are some ways to become involved in school life at BK:
1. Booster Club. BK has a very active Booster Club, and all parents are automatically members in this organization. The Boosters sponsor many of the social and fundraising events at the school, and participating in any one of these events is a great way to meet other parents and help out at the same time. Each month, the school calendar and Booster newsletter is mailed to every BK family, and in that publication you’ll find information on all the upcoming events. You are sure to find an activity that matches your interests, ability, and time. The Booster Club link on our website will also put you in touch with the club’s officers, who would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
2. Sports, Clubs, and Activities. If you have a special skill that might prove to be an asset to one of our student organizations, or if you want to be a parent helper in one of your child’s clubs or sports, contact the faculty advisor or coach for that activity. They can let you know where help is needed, or put you in contact with the person who can. Most of these groups are pro-active, and the team parent volunteers or advisors will usually seek your help at the beginning of each season, but if not, feel free to ask!
3. The Bishop Kelly Foundation. Each fall, our school’s Foundation sponsors the Winner’s Choice Dinner and Auction. This exciting event benefits an endowment which provides an annual grant to the school, and is extremely important to the ongoing financial security of Bishop Kelly. Last year’s auction raised in excess of $250,000, and its success is due to the efforts of a talented group of volunteers. For more information on becoming involved with this event, contact the Bishop Kelly Foundation Executive Director, Julie Lliteras, at 323.4789.
4. School-Related Events. Throughout the year, several events are held that require adult participation and/or assistance. For example, our Challenger Day and Class Retreats often need parent support; each spring we ask for volunteers to help on the Senior Portfolio panels; and each class sponsors events (dances, concessions, Senior Tea, Senior Class Party, Parent Appreciation Dinner and others) that also require some adult involvement. Most of these requests for help can be found in the Bishop Kelly electronic newsletter, BK Alive. The newsletter is an invaluable source of information relating to the school, and will also let you know when volunteer opportunities arise and who to contact.
