Help me to see Jesus in others and to have others see Jesus in me.
--BK Prayer
Mission and Vision
The spiritual atmosphere at Bishop Kelly High School sets it apart from other area high schools. Our goal is to develop each student to his/her fullest potential as a leader and as a responsible citizen of the world, who is imbued with a strong set of moral values, a sense of service and a love of learning. We begin our work with the belief that each student is essentially good and infinitely lovable. Guided by our Catholic tradition, we recognize Jesus Christ as the model of the total person we are seeking to develop. Growth in faith is at the heart of the Bishop Kelly mission. Students study a four-year Theology curriculum, participate in a program fostering community outreach, and attend a yearly retreat.
Theology Department Philosophy
The Theology Department at Bishop Kelly High School has the responsibilities for developing, coordinating, and overseeing that portion of the school's academic curriculum which deals with the knowledge of God and religious truth. The focus of Bishop Kelly's instructional theology program is to be found in what is called "didache" - an awareness and experience of God's love and redemption as revealed in scripture and tradition - the cognitive element. The school's total theology program is composed of two additional components, known as "koinonia" - which is faith formation based on involvement in Christian community - and "diakonia" - which encompasses prayer, liturgy, sacramental celebrations, retreats, etc.
Campus Ministry
Bishop Kelly High School’s Campus Ministry fosters the Catholic mission of the school by helping our students integrate their religious knowledge into their daily lives. Through liturgies, retreats, service and peer ministry activities, students grow both as individuals and as a community. BK builds on values instilled in the family by encouraging students to develop lifelong faith convictions and lasting relationships with God.
Liturgy
Bishop Kelly High School offers liturgical opportunities throughout the year. Both Eucharistic liturgies and prayer services assist us as a community in celebrating and recognizing God's presence in our lives through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. . . ." Through the Eucharist, we are nourished by God's infinite mercy and compassion and are invited to become more loving and just and to grow more like Christ in our daily life. In every liturgy celebrated, people of all faith backgrounds are welcomed and have an opportunity to receive a blessing.
This year, weekly mass is offered by various area priests on Friday mornings in our community chapel and all students, faculty/staff, and parents are warmly invited. See the schedule below for exact time and dates. Opportunity for personal prayer is always available during the day in our school chapel. Each month, members of the BKHS community gather in the Carley Center for the Monthly Community Liturgy. There are many ways to assist with liturgies. As a student campus minister, you may assist as lector, Eucharistic minister, altar server, greeter, etc. Those not currently serving as a campus minister can participate as artists, musicians, liturgical dance, thesbian and technical staff.
Each month, the Campus Ministry class chooses a liturgical theme that is interwoven into the liturgy. The school year begins with the Mass of the Holy Spirit and concludes with a Mass celebrating our graduating seniors. All Holy Days of Obligation that fall on a school day are celebrated as a student body Mass. Please see below for this year’s Liturgical Schedule.
Schedule For Liturgy of the Eucharist
We are honored to have Father Rob Cook at Bishop Kelly as our Chaplin. Mass will be celebrated in the chapel at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday - Friday, weekly.
Days of Recollection
Each of the four grade levels at BKHS spend an entire day of recollection off campus, allowing students to experience their class as a faith community. Through prayer, activities, and small group sharing exercises, students enhance their relationship with others and with God. These days are very practical, and the topics covered help students bring faith and values to bear on the pressures of life. Participation in a retreat is not a requirement at BK.
School Prayer
Bishop Kelly High School encourages all students to embraces prayer. Each morning the school community offers prayers and petitions to God, led by our student campus ministers over the PA in order to begin each day grounded in our relationship with God. Each class period begins with prayer, lead either by the teacher or students. Our day ends with closure prayer, lead by a faculty or staff member over the PA.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
All students are given the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during lent; however, individual reconciliation can be administered by appointment with Father Rob Cook. Please sign up in the front office.
For questions about any of this information, please contact the Director of Campus Ministry, Jan Siron.
