Art Philosophy

The arts are the cornerstone of humanity and, as such, they celebrate the uniqueness of each individual student as well as create a bond for civilization as a whole. The goal of the Bishop Kelly High School Art Department is to provide opportunities for students to reach their fullest potential mentally, emotionally, creatively, aesthetically, socially, physically, and spiritually. It is the belief of the department that the process of creating and understanding works of art is critical to the development of all people. Art is a basic component of a quality education and is fundamental for the full development of an individual who would regard himself/herself “educated.”

Music Philosophy

The Music Department at Bishop Kelly High School subscribes to the belief that a balanced secondary education should incorporate opportunities for students to expand their musical awareness – both vocally and instrumentally. Such experiences can serve to provide cultural growth and personal fulfillment as well as unlimited enjoyment. Exposure to music theory and music history can lead students to a deeper understanding of and appreciation for a variety of music including classical, folk, jazz and the characteristics particular to them. Bishop Kelly students will be given opportunities to develop a lifelong appreciation for music along with the ability to become knowledgeable performers and attentive and sensitive listeners. In addition to performance-based offerings, the Music Department at Bishop Kelly High School will sponsor appreciation- based course offerings whose goal will be to provide the total student body with opportunities to encounter a cross-section of the richness of the world’s greatest music in a non-performance environment.

Fine Arts

Art is an intense and demanding high school art curriculum with exciting rewards for the serious art student. Students  will share a studio with the most motivated and experienced artists in our school. Students will create a series of works in either 2-dimensional works (painting, drawing, printing, photography, video, collaging etc.) or 3-dimensional works (clay, wire, cardboard, plaster, assemblage etc.) formats.  Works in each portfolio must demonstrate inquiry through art and design and development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year.

Portfolios include works of art and design, process documentation, and written information about the work presented. In May, students submit portfolios to AP Central for evaluation based on specific criteria, which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas and sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision, guided by questions. The national requirements and examples of art works can be found at the following links: AP 3-D Art and Design, AP 2-D Art and Design, AP Drawing
