Spanish for Heritage Speakers

Spanish for Heritage Speakers

Spanish for Heritage Speakers

Grade Levels:
Prerequisite: Native Spanish speaker; recommendation from instructor
First Semester 55140A (S1) AND Second Semester 55140B (S2)
Two Semesters (FY)

Students will take this class, and then AP Spanish. Heritage language speakers are raised in a home where a non-English language is spoken and possess a level of foreign language competence that far exceeds the level of typical students in foreign language courses. They have already attained some oral proficiency and internalized basic grammatical structures. Although they speak and understand the language, many heritage language learners have difficulty reading and writing Spanish; therefore, their language needs vastly differ from those of their peers learning Spanish for the first time.

Incoming Native Spanish speaking students: Recommended Spanish sequence for native Spanish speakers: Spanish 3 or 4, AP Spanish, Native speakers will consult with a counselor and World Language teacher for proper placement.
